You don't need to know where to begin.
Maybe you've spent years being the dependable one.
Maybe you're successful on paper but something inside doesn't feel settled. Maybe relationships keep exposing patterns you don't completely understand.
Or perhaps you've simply reached a stage of life where you're beginning to wonder about the man you've become and the man you still have the capacity to become.
You're in the right place.
This isn't about teaching men how to be men.
There are already enough people doing that.
The Modern Man Project is about understanding the experiences that shape us.
The expectations we inherited. The promises we made to ourselves when we were young. The ways we learned to protect ourselves. The relationships that reveal us.
And the forms of strength that help us survive but sometimes become the armour that keeps everyone else out.
We explore masculinity without pretending there is one correct way to be a man.
The aim is to understand ourselves well enough to live deliberately rather than unconsciously repeat what we inherited.
“Understanding where something came from doesn't excuse it. It gives us the opportunity to decide whether we still want to carry it.”
What We Talk About
The subjects change, but they all return to one larger question: how do we become more conscious about the way we live, love and relate to ourselves?
Identity
Who are you beneath the roles, responsibilities and expectations you've accumulated?
Relationships
How do we love someone honestly without disappearing into them or hiding from them?
Fathers & Childhood
What did the men before us teach us, deliberately or simply through the way they lived?
Strength & Vulnerability
What happens when being strong becomes the only way we know how to exist?
Purpose & Meaning
What happens when achievement and success stop answering the bigger questions?
Growth
How do we take responsibility for who we become without spending our lives blaming who we were?
There isn't one right way into this.
Listen. Read. Or go deeper.
Pick whichever feels most natural. If something catches you, follow it.
The Promises We Make as Children
Start with Episode 1 of The Modern Man Project Podcast.
It explores the quiet decisions we make about ourselves when we are young and the way those decisions can continue shaping our adult lives.
- “I won't need anybody.”
- “I'll never be weak.”
- “I'll keep everyone happy.”
- “I'll prove myself.”
Those promises may have protected us once. The question is whether they're still serving us now.
The Story You've Been Living
Start with the writing.
Most of us carry a story explaining who we are. Far fewer of us stop to ask where that story came from.
I'd begin with these three:
- The Story You've Been Living
- The Promise You Never Knew You Made
- When Survival Becomes Personality
They form a natural introduction to the ideas behind The Modern Man Project.
Strong Enough to Fall
The Art of Balancing Vulnerability with Modern Masculinity
If you want to explore the ideas in greater depth, start with the first book in the Strong Enough series.
It looks at the tension many men experience between strength and vulnerability, independence and connection, resilience and emotional honesty.
What if vulnerability isn't the opposite of strength, but part of it?
“I'm not standing outside this subject looking in. I'm in it.”
This began with my own questions.
I've spent much of my life thinking about strength, responsibility, success, relationships and what it means to be a man.
Some of what I believed served me extremely well.
Some of it didn't.
The Modern Man Project came from trying to understand the difference.
I write and speak about these things because I've become increasingly convinced that many men are carrying questions they rarely get the opportunity to ask.
I want this to be one of the places where we can ask them.
You don't need to agree with everything. Just be willing to think about it.
You don't have to read everything. You don't have to listen to every episode. And you certainly don't need to have everything figured out.
