Speaking

Conversations men rarely get invited to have.

Talks about masculinity, vulnerability, identity, relationships and the things men often carry quietly.

The Modern Man Project speaking sessions are designed to start conversations rather than deliver lectures.

They explore the pressure men carry, the stories we inherit and what happens when strength becomes something we hide behind rather than something we choose.

Why These Conversations Matter

Men are often surrounded by people and still have nowhere to put what they carry.

Many men know how to perform strength long before they learn how to talk about what is happening underneath it.

We know how to work, provide, fix, lead, solve and keep going.

What we are not always good at is recognising when those strengths have become armour.

These talks create space to explore that without attacking masculinity, blaming men or pretending vulnerability is the answer to everything.

The aim is simpler: help people recognise themselves, ask better questions and leave with something worth thinking about.

“The aim isn't to tell men how to be men. It's to create enough space for them to ask whether the man they became is still the man they want to be.”

Speaking Topics

Talks that open the door.

Each session can stand alone or become the beginning of a wider conversation.

01
Strength & Vulnerability

The Cost of Being Strong All the Time

Men are often praised for being dependable, capable and resilient.

But what happens when being the strong one stops being something you choose and becomes the only version of yourself you know how to be?

This talk explores the hidden cost of constant strength, emotional self-reliance and the belief that needing support is somehow a failure.

02
Identity

The Man Beneath the Mask

Most men wear masks without realising they are masks.

The capable one. The funny one. The successful one. The calm one. The man who never needs anything.

This talk explores where those identities come from and what happens when we begin separating the person we genuinely are from the role we learned to perform.

03
Connection

Why Men Struggle to Ask for Help

Many men are remarkably comfortable giving help and deeply uncomfortable receiving it.

This session looks at independence, usefulness, shame and why asking for support can feel far more threatening than simply carrying the problem alone.

It also asks what healthier male support can look like without removing responsibility, resilience or self-respect.

04
Fathers & Inheritance

The Men We Inherit

Our fathers are often our first examples of what it means to be a man.

We inherit far more than their names, faces and mannerisms. We absorb attitudes towards strength, emotion, work, relationships, success and failure.

This talk explores what fathers pass down, consciously and unconsciously, and how men can honour where they came from without being required to repeat it.

05
Childhood & Identity

The Promise You Never Knew You Made

Some of the most powerful decisions we make about ourselves happen before we are old enough to understand what we are deciding.

Don't need anyone. Don't cause trouble. Be useful. Be strong. Make people proud.

This talk explores the quiet childhood promises that can become adult identities and asks whether the promises that once protected us still deserve to run our lives.

06
Patterns & Survival

When Survival Becomes Personality

Independent. Driven. Calm in a crisis. Perfectionist. Always available. Never asking for anything.

Sometimes the qualities we are proudest of began as ways of keeping ourselves safe.

This talk looks at the difference between a genuine strength and a survival strategy that has been repeated for so long that we now mistake it for personality.

07
Peace & Purpose

Why Some Men Don't Know How to Be at Peace

For a man who has spent his life solving, providing, achieving and preparing for the next problem, peace can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

If your value has always come from being useful, what happens when nobody needs anything from you?

This talk explores busyness, achievement, usefulness and why some men find it easier to survive a storm than sit comfortably beneath a clear sky.

08
Love & Relationships

How to Love Without Losing Yourself

Healthy relationships require closeness, but closeness does not require disappearing into another person.

Men can move between two extremes: emotional distance on one side and losing boundaries, identity and independence on the other.

This talk explores intimacy, boundaries, vulnerability and how to love another person deeply while remaining firmly rooted in yourself.

09
Silence & Emotional Life

The Silence Between Men and Their Pain

Men are not necessarily incapable of feeling. Many simply learned very early that certain feelings were safer when kept private.

The problem is that silence rarely removes pain. It often turns pain into isolation.

This talk explores why men hide emotional difficulty, what happens when silence becomes normal and how honest conversation can happen without turning vulnerability into performance.

10
Leadership

Strong Enough to Lead

Leadership is often associated with certainty, authority and having the answers.

But some of the strongest leaders are capable of admitting uncertainty, hearing uncomfortable truths, taking responsibility and allowing other people to contribute without feeling threatened by them.

This talk explores leadership without armour: the relationship between self-awareness, vulnerability, accountability, emotional maturity and genuine authority.

Who It's For

Different rooms. The same human questions.

Sessions can be adapted to suit the people in the room rather than delivering the same talk everywhere.

Men's Groups

Open, relatable conversations about strength, emotion, relationships, identity and the things men often struggle to put into words.

Workplaces

Talks around male wellbeing, pressure, leadership, emotional resilience and healthier conversations at work.

Community Organisations

Accessible sessions designed to start meaningful conversations without requiring specialist knowledge or therapy language.

Charities & Support Groups

Sessions that complement existing wellbeing and men's mental health initiatives while remaining grounded and practical.

Leadership Teams

Exploring how identity, vulnerability, responsibility and emotional awareness affect the way men lead themselves and others.

Podcasts & Events

Longer conversations, panel discussions and interviews around masculinity, relationships, writing and The Modern Man Project.

The Aim

Not answers. Better questions.

A good talk should stay with you after the room has emptied.

The objective isn't to diagnose people or give them a new set of rules to follow.

It is to give them language for things they may already recognise in themselves and enough permission to look at those things differently.

Recognition

The moment somebody thinks, “Bloody hell. I do that.”

Language

A clearer way to describe patterns, emotions and experiences that may previously have been difficult to explain.

Permission

A sense that strength and vulnerability do not have to be enemies.

Conversation

Something useful to talk about with partners, friends, colleagues, sons, fathers or other men.

Choice

Greater awareness of the difference between an inherited pattern and a deliberate decision.

Formats

Built around the room.

The format can be adapted depending on the audience, event and amount of time available.

20–30 Minute Talk

A focused session built around one central idea, designed particularly well for men's groups, community events and wellbeing sessions.

45–60 Minute Session

A deeper exploration of a topic with more room for storytelling, reflection and audience discussion.

Conversation & Q&A

A more informal format combining a shorter talk with facilitated discussion, questions and honest conversation.

Dan Grové

I'm not interested in standing on a stage and pretending I have men figured out.

I'm interested in creating conversations I wish more men had been invited into earlier.

The Modern Man Project grew out of my own questions about masculinity, vulnerability, relationships, strength and the identities men construct around themselves.

My writing and speaking combine lived experience, reflection and the recurring patterns that appear when men begin talking honestly about what is happening underneath the surface.

There are serious subjects here, but the conversation does not have to become heavy or clinical.

Humour matters. Humanity matters. And people are far more likely to examine themselves when they don't feel they are being lectured.

The Modern Man Project

Speak honestly. Think deeply. Leave people with something worth carrying away.

Talks can be adapted to different audiences, organisations and event formats.
